December ~
Steep Slope German Muller Thurgau: Grown in the Rheinhessen region which is defined by the densely planted vines that cling to the steep banks of the Rhine River, this variety is the second most planted vine in Germany. It was created in the late 19th century, and has grown in popularity immensely since. The profile of this grape closely resembles the aromatic intensity of a Riesling but is differentiated by ripening earlier and having less acidity. This wine has a straw yellow colour with greenish lights and an intense, aromatic, fruity perfume. Light in body with a delicate off-dry taste, this wine is well balanced by mild acidity giving it a long-lasting finish.
January & February
Spanish Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon: Grown in the northeast corner of Spain in the Caralonia region, this juicy red wine is drenched in flavours. Tempranillo is a black grape with a thick skin. The best results from the grape are obtained in a cool climate which helps to build acidity, however in order to get high sugar levels and pull the deep colour, heat is required. The heat brings out the flavours of ripe fruit, blackberries, cherries and plum. But it is the subtle hints of oak and truffles that round of the fruitiness to make this wine unique and complex. This wine has rich tannins and a substantial structure that evolves into velvety touches of smoke and spices acquired from both American and Hungarian oaks.
High Altitude Argentinean Trio: Grown in the south east tip of South America, Argentina’s Meddoza vineyards are planted at higher altitudes than conventional vineyards which has many benefits. The higher altitude extends the growing season in an area which is the same latitude as the Sahara Desert. The cool nights keep the acidity crisp while warm days increase sugar levels. This is a blend of three noble varieties; Viognier, Riesling and Chardonnay. This blend highlights the apricot and floral notes of viognier, the minerality of Riesling, and the tropical aromas of Chardonnay. This wine is near perfect in regards to its fresh and balanced fruitiness complimented by hints of vanilla and a lingering finish.
Okanagan Valley Red Meritage: Grown in our own backyard this blend is fast gaining popularity around the globe. This new traditional blend must contain at least two varieties with no one grape being more than 90%. It generally consists primarily of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc sometimes with a little Malbec and Petit verdot for good measure. This wine is wonderfully rich, with aromas of vanilla, chocolate and leather. On the palate there are flavors of plum and black currant with a touch of cloves accented by French oak. The long finish accents the ripe tannins which add to this wines complexity. Simply Perfect.
March & April
Alpine Foothills Italian Barbaresco: From the piedmont region in Italy, comes this elegant full-bodied red wine. It is very sensitive to both soil and geography and yields wines that can vary when grown in only slightly different locales. While a young wine it is very tannic with age they will mellow to reveal complex flavors and aromas. One of the more problematic grapes in the vineyard and for some winemakers feel that it is even more difficult to deal with than pinot noir. This wine is dark red in color and with aromatic notes of violets, roses and small red fruits. On the palate it has rich, chewy, deep flavors with spicy tannins. A touch of oak creates a wonderful balance and brings out these wine outstanding features!
More special editions will be added in the months to come, so keep checking back to see what new varieties are available.
